Golf at Split Rock:

Split Rock Golf Course is one of the best-kept secrets in the Northeast, offering 27-holes to resort guests and the public. It’s majestic 585-yard 11th hole claims one of the most spectacular views in the entire Northeast, let alone one found on a golf course. Because the holes are spaciously distributed, carts with GPS are provided. Play takes about 4 1/2 hours to complete 18 holes.

The starting tees on this 6,500-yard course are impressively landscaped. Offering championship black to ladies red, each starting tees offers its own unique view of the fairway, having been positioned at different angles and elevations. The trees surrounding the course are abundant and as most trees indigenous to the region, positively burst with color in the fall. On some holes the trees create tight fairways, but the grounds crew at Split Rock do an excellent job managing the undergrowth so a duffer can find their ball without considerable difficulty.

Split Rock Resort is a thinking man’s course and has to be played with a combination of strategy and power. The driver will see use on the longer holes three holes are over 550-yards and other holes where only a thunderous drive can clear water to reach the fairway. Ravines, ponds, and bunker-lined fairways, along with the occasional deer or turkey, require the golfer to carefully measure their club choice.

History:

Split Rock Resort, which was once a hunting and fishing retreat for executives of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company in the 1940’s, is now a successful four-season resort. Located in the western region of the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania and overlooking beautiful Lake Harmony, Split Rock includes over 1200 acres that encompasses a wide variety of accommodations and recreational amenities. The Resort offers a wonderful escape for a relaxing weekend, a corporate meeting or a fun-filled family vacation. There is something for everyone to enjoy at Split Rock, conveniently located only 1 1/2 hours from Philadelphia and 2 hours from New York City.

A little more than 170 years ago, the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company bought 45,000 acres in the Pocono Mountains to protect its headwater rights to the Lehigh River. The development and transfiguration of the land began in 1938 when Robert V. White took over the presidency of the company. Mr. White realized the potential of the beautiful mountain terrain with it’s abundance of wildlife and fishing streams. Within 10 years of its opening in 1941, The Lodge was one of the East’s finest year-round sports resorts.

With the demise of the coal industry, Lehigh Coal and Navigation lost much of its interest in The Lodge, and it was sold to Treadway Inn in July of 1967. Treadway operated Split Rock until shortly after a devastating fire destroyed the major portion of The Lodge on August 23, 1970. In June 1971, a group of Split Rock cottage owners formed Pocono Recreation, Inc. and purchased the Split Rock property from Treadway. Pocono Recreation, Inc. constructed 50 rooms at the Lodge and operated the property throughout the 70’s.

On April 2, 1981, Split Rock was purchased by W. Jack and Barbara J. Kalins and the stock of Pocono Recreation, Inc. was merged into their company, Vacation Charters, Ltd. Since that time, The Lodge has evolved into a full service resort and new facilities have been built to accommodate the growing number of guests. The owners, management and staff realize the rich tradition and history of Split Rock and continue to serve customers in accordance with the time-honored standards expected by the Resort’s vacationing guests for well over 50 years.

The Kalins family has continued its expansion from the original 50-room Split Rock Lodge to over 750 bedrooms in a variety of suites and condominium style villas. The 27-hole championship golf course is being expanded to add an additional 9 holes, and a full service club house features casual and fine dining as well as a complete selection of golf equipment and attire. Willowbrook at Lake Harmony’s two-bedroom suites are being strategically built to surround the new course, offering spectacular views of the mountain laurel, rhododendron and white tail deer native to the Pocono Mountains.

The latest addition to Split Rock is its 53,326 s.f. indoor waterpark. H20ooohh!! features a wave pool, play structure, 5 raft/tube & body slides, warm & hot spas as well as Pennsylvania’s first indoor Flow Rider that offers a simulated wave to boogie board or try your luck as a surfer!
